|The Chi Chung Kung abdominal massage has its roots in China and Thailand. The abdomen is massaged using various techniques to stimulate emptying of the bowel, with no side effects, whereas taking some over-the-counter so called "natural laxatives" can result in cramping and pain with perhaps the need to take time off work to cope with the unpleasant side-effects.|
In the West, up to the 1950's, abdominal massage was commonly taught in nursing schools, and mothers were instructed how to massage their children. In his book written in 1903, Hygiene of the Nursery, Dr L Starr included long chapters about the regimen and feeding of infants and children, and the use of massage in constipation management.
Thus, abdominal massage, once the standard method of managing constipation, has now been largely replaced by laxatives.
Constipation is a gastrointestinal motility condition resulting in difficult and/or infrequent bowel movements. Although some say that less than three times a week constitutes constipation, others affirm that there ideally should be a bowel movement resulting from each meal; once digested, a meal can only putrefy and intoxicate the body.
Constipation may result from diet change, medication, daily routine change, putting off or emotional stress, the latter being easily and almost instantly remedied by Neuro Linguistic Programming.
Long lasting constipation may, amongst other factors, be an indicator of disease, poor diet, physical obstruction and decreased motility, resulting in increased transit time and dry stools, which are difficult to pass.
Allopathic treatments may include diet change to increase fibre and water intake, not putting off the urge, exercise and enemas. Naturopaths look upon constipation as being caused by dilated intestines, loose rectal muscles or irritation by food, medication, parasites or emotional stress. Treatment may include probiotics, digestive enzymes and colonic hydrotherapy (Doorman, 2006).
